"It ain't exactly the sort of place I like to work out," Chuck said, peering down the spiral staircase into the darkness beneath the Citadel. "But I will admit, I like a challenge. So what's it to be, some sort of obstacle race?"

"Not exactly." I shrugged off my coat, so I was dressed in my shifting kit, just like Chuck. "We're going to look for elementals."

"Ha! I knew something wasn't right when you messaged me. You were too mad last time around to just get back to training."

"It could have just been training," I said crossly, as I led him down the stairs. "But this came up first."

"Sure, whatever you say."

"You can be a real ass, you know that?"

"And you've got a fine ass, you know that?"

I rolled my eyes so hard I half expected Chuck to hear it. But I needed some backup for this, and without help from the authorities, there was no one better for the job than Chuck.

As we walked down the stairs, our way lit by bare bulbs, I explained my previous trips into the tunnels and the trouble I'd found down there.

"So, you're playing Nancy Drew, and you want me to be a Hardy Boy?" Chuck said. "Reckon I'll be Joe. Frank was too bookish for me."

"A character in a book was too bookish?"

"And a soda can be too sweet. Deal with it."

We emerged from the tunnels into the same cavern of old storage barrels and crates I'd been to before.

"This is where they attacked me and Herman," I said.

"So what's the plan?" Chuck stretched and looked around. "You fixing to pick another fight, see what we can tear out of them?"

"Maybe," I admitted. "Though I was hoping we might get a look around first."

I walked across the cave, away from the bright light immediately below the bulbs. Ahead of me, a heap of rotten old sacks oozed and heaved. I leaned in to take a closer look.

Muck sprayed from the heap. I jerked back just in time to avoid being hit, and the filth spattered on the ground around me. Then it started to flow together, joining a rising column of ooze.

"This is it," I said, backing towards Chuck. "One of the elementals."

"You fixing to fight it?" Chuck asked, cracking his knuckles. "Seems like as good a way as any to learn about them."

It was such a stupidly jock thing to say, I wanted to disagree on principle. But he was right; this was the option we had.

"Let's do it."

The last time, I'd been limited by my human form. This time, I'd come ready for a fight. I let the spirit of the panther flow through me. Muscles twisted and bones shifted, claws shot from fingertips, and I sank to all fours. My shifting clothes stretched to accommodate me, as I became a black panther, sleek and deadly.

Chuck stood beside me, shifting in a subtler way. Claws grew from the ends of his fingers, veins throbbed in his arms, and he bared his teeth, revealing the points of vampiric fangs.
